896. Samuel HALE [193] 767 was born on 1 Jul 1615 in Watton-At-Stone, Hertfordshire, England768 and died on 9 Nov 1693 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut768,854 at age 78. Another name for Samuel was Ebenezer.

General Notes: The Hales are supposed to have come from. Wales, and are said to have been men of large size and uncommon strength; in evidence of which lie relates a story (similar to what has been related of certain other men in other towns) of a Mr. Hale of Glastonbury, who was challenged by the "bully" of another town, to a trial of strength. Mr. Hale, whom he met on the road with a load of cider in barrels, accepted the challenge and then knocking the bung out of a barrel, raised it to his lips, by the chine, and, after taking a drink, offered it to his astonished would-be opponent to do likewise-who thereupon backed out of the appointed test of strength.

Samuel Hale was born in Watton-at-Stone, Hertfordshire, about 1615. His family "was one of the yeoman class and in comfortable circumstances." Two brothers and a sister, Samuel, Thomas and Martha, were the first Hales to settle in Connecticut. They probably arrived in New England by 1634 and its likely Samuel and his sister were with their brother Thomas when he came to Hartford in 1635. At the time Samuel was in his early twenties and unmarried. If Samuel and his sister did not initially accompany Thomas, it is certain that they soon joined him, for he was in Hartford as a volunteer soldier when the Pequot War broke out in 1637. He may have participated in the notorious action in 1637 at what the English called Fort Mystic, on the Mystic River. The war was an engagement between Pequot Indians and the English, whose forces consisted of a Massachusetts force under the command of John Underhill, a Connecticut force under the command of Captain John Mason, and a number of Mohegan (Mohican) and Narragansett Indian allies. Altogether there were about 90 English, 70 Mohegans and some smaller number of Narragansetts. Before the engagement at Fort Mystic, Mason sent 20 of his men home to guard their villages from Indian attacks. Whether Samuel Hale was among them is unknown. If he was, then he was a part of Mason's forces at Fort Mystic. The number of Pequots at Fort Mystic was probably six or seven hundred, of whom at least 150 were warriors. The majority of the other 450 or 550 appear to have been women, children and old men. Almost all were killed, most burned to death after Mason ordered that the combustible fort in which they were trapped be set afire. Thomas was also a soldier in the Pequot War.

The brothers were two of the original proprietors at Hartford, and as such were entitled to land there. Samuel was still there in 1639, at which time he owned at least one additional plot of land given him for having served in the war against the Pequot Indians. By 1643 he was living in Wethersfield. On 4 Dec 1645, he was fined twenty nobles "for his mysdemeanor by excesse in drinkeing". In the early 1650s, he and his brother Thomas were two of the founders of Norwalk, Connecticut, where he again obtained land. In 1655 his estate was rated at £250, more than twice that of his brother Thomas which placed him among the wealthier residents of the community. His prominence and popularity there were evidenced by his election to several terms of the Connecticut General Court. He sold his home-lot and dwelling house in 1660/1 and returned to Wethersfield to the part which became Glastonbury presumably upon the occasion of marrying Mary Smith, whose father was minister there. Samuel and Mary took the former residence of Gov. Thomas Welles, who died in 1659.

On 8 May 1690, the General Court of the Colony of Connecticut, on the petition of a group of citizens, including; Samuel Hale Sr. and Samuel Hale Jr., residents of Wethersfield and owners of land belonging to that town on the east side of Connecticut River, granted them an act of incorporation, "that they may be a township of themselves, and have liberty to provide themselves a minister." In granting their petition the General Court advised them "to be cautious how they improve it," and stipulated that until they should have a good orthodox minister settled among them. "They should pay their full proportion to the public charge to Wethersfield." With this caution, they seem to have proceeded deliberately in the work of organization, having previously located their meeting-house on the ground afterward known as the "Green". The founders of the town having come from the neighborhood of Glastonbury in England, the General Court, in June 1692, named the "town at Nabuc, over against Wethersfield" as Glassenbury.

Thomas Hale, Samuels's brother was born in England and probably died in Norwalk before 1659. He first appeared in Roxbury where he settled by 1634 and was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony 14 May 1634. Church records indicate Thomas, a single man, lived in Roxbury for but a short time but removed to Hartford and that afterwards returned and married Jane Lord about Dec 1639 and the next spring returned to Connecticut. She probably died in Norwalk before 1659. He removed to Charlestown, Massachusetts to married Mary Nash on 14 Dec 1659 and was living there in 1666. He was again in Norwalk in 1674 and presumably died there. The inventory of his estate taken 19 Feb 1678/79 included estate at Charlestown and Norwalk. Mary Hale his second wife probably died between 1696 and 1699. He had one son by Jane Lord and a son and daughter by Mary Nash his second wife.

Martha Hale, born in England about 1622, died at Harford after 7 Mar 1699/1700; married Deacon Paul Peck, born in England ~1618 and died at Hartford 23 Dec 1695. . He was Deacon of the First Congregationalist Church from 1681 until his death and the first preacher in Wethersfield. They had ten children.

Burial Notes: Here lieth interred the | body of Cap. Joseph Maudsly who was born Decemb. 21 1670, and died August the15th Anno Dom. 1719

General Notes: The land where the "Moseley House" presently stands at 1803 Main Street, Glastonbury, was originally owned by John Plum of Wethersfield. In the 1680's James Richards of Northampton, Massachusetts, bought the land and farm in Glastonbury from John Plum. The farm was 93 rods running north and south and three miles long, running East and West consisting of 558 acres. This land was part of the original three mile lot grant. Upon his death, Mr. Richards bequeathed to his widowed daughter Mary Alford of Northampton. "The Farm at Naubuc with all the buildings there on."

Joseph Maudsley was a close relative by marriage to James Richards. In 1715 Mary Alford asked Joseph to run the farm in Glastonbury for her. He accepted the offer and brought his family to Glastonbury. He worked the farm for three years and by 1718 was able to purchase it for £1,237. Unfortunately he died one year later. Joseph gave his wife Abigail and his daughters Abigail, Sarah, Mary, Hannah and Rachel £100 each also giving his wife £100 and provided for her to stay in the main house with the children. In his will he listed other buildings, along with his personal property he listed a new bed in his chamber, a number of featherbeds and some furniture which seems to indicate there was a large house on the property. The inventory of the estate both real and personal was set at £1,250. The estate was settled and distributed in 1723.

Joseph divided his estate between his four sons. The younger sons David and Job received farms in Westfield, Mass. He deeded his Glastonbury property to his sons Abner and Isaac. Abner, the eldest son, was given property on the north side of father's farm. Isaac was deeded the land and the buildings on the south side of his father's farm. Abner and Isaac worked their farms and during this time they changed the spelling of their name to MOSELEY. In the final division of common lands Abner and Isaac were regarded as representing one householder at the incorporation of the Town.

Abner and Isaac served as surveyors, selectmen, grand jurors surveyors of highways and road commissioners. As farmers, crops were grown in the meadow and when the land was cleared it was used for grazing or planting. They also sold the fine chestnut, oak and pine trees growing there. They also ran a saw mill.

The property passed from father to son through five generations until 1859.

His will was dated 12 Aug 1719 and inventory, £1701-14-03, taken Dec 1719 by Benjamin Talcott and Thomas Welles. A new inventory ordered by the Court, viz., the lands and buildings, valued £1465-00-00, by Thomas Welles and Benjamin Talcott: I, Joseph Modsley (sic) of Glosomberry (sic), the County of Hartford, and in his majestie's Colony of Connecticut in New England, husbandman, being very sick, do make and ordain this my last will and testament: Imprimis: I give and bequeath unto Abigail, my dearly beloved wife, ye sum of £100.
