He was one of the patentees named in the Charter of Charles the First, granted to Connecticut April 20, 1662; which document was entrusted to Wyllis, Talcott and Allyn for safe-keeping. In 1676, on the breaking out of the Philip war, he resigned the office of treasurer and was appointed to the command of the army with the rank of major, and in June of that year went into the field at the head of the "standing army" of Connecticut, accompanied by 200 Mohigan and "Pequot Indians." In the various battles with the Indians in which he was engaged, he was always victorious, and obtained great renown as an "Indian fighter."
Many of his official papers are on record in the Secretary of State's office at Hartford, and are interesting relics of the memorable Philip war. Early in the war he was promoted to the rank of Lieut.-Colonel. In March 1662 the General Court granted to him and to John Allyn 600 acres of upland and 100 acres of meadow land, to be laid out in Hammonaset (Killingsworth).

He died intestate, his property amounting to £2232 3s. 6d. was claimed by his oldest surviving son, Governor Joseph Talcott, who petitioned the General Court May 15, 1691, to give him possession thereof, which he claimed by right of primogeniture. John Marsh, the immigrant was sixth of seven children and is said to have come to New England in 1635, going first to Cambridge. He was supposed to have gone with Hooker's company the next year to Hartford, where he became one of the first settlers. He had grants of land for himself and others in 1639-40. His home lot was #16 on the north side of the stream that now runs through Bushnell Park, where Temple and Front street now cross. He had other grants later, one tract, "up Neck", on Windsor Avenue which in 1905 was still in the possession of one of his direct descendants. He was a proprietor of the common lands, a leading citizen and one of the five higher magistrates in 1639, holding office until 1655, when he became deputy governor. After serving as governor in 1656, he resumed the office of magistrate, which he held until 1659.

In 1659 he removed to Hadley, Massachusetts. He was dismissed from the Hartford church, July 11, 1656. After the death of the first pastor of the First Church in Hartford, an unhappy and protracted quarrel arose which resulted in the departure of a considerable number of its members to Hadley. He had lot in Hadley, and was one of the selectmen in 1675. He was one of the original members of the Northampton church, June 18, 1661. His will was dated 3 Mar 1687-88 and proved 4 Dec 1688. 2061. Anne WEBSTER [400] 845 was born on 29 Jul 1621942 and died on 9 Jun 1662 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts845 at age 40.

General Notes: Anne's father was Governor John Webster (1590-1661) and Agnes Smith (1585-1667). John Webster came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony with his wife and five children in the early 1630s, settling in the area of Newtowne (now Cambridge, Massachusetts). He left for Suckiaug, Connecticut (now Hartford) in 1636, in all probability with Thomas Hooker and his adherents. His first public office was as a member of a committee that joined with the Court of Magistrates in determining the course of war with the Pequot Indians. According to the records at the time, he was chosen from 1639 to 1655 to be magistrate, in 1655 he was chosen as Deputy Governor of the Colony of Connecticut, governor of the Colony of Connecticut in 1656, and first magistrate from 1657 to 1659.
A split amongst the church members in Hartford grew when the current reverend at the First Church in Hartford, Samuel Stone, declared that the requirement that stated only parents that had both taken communion should be allowed to have a child baptized would be removed, and non-communicants would be allowed to vote. John Webster, among others, was a part of a council that agreed that this was not acceptable. Reverend Stone chose to ignore this sentiment, and the issue was taken up with the General Court in Massachusetts. The Court ruled that although Reverend Stone had been too strict in ignoring the majority of his parishioners, he was right in liberalizing the baptism ritual. It was also found that those who disagreed with the reverend could remove themselves to a location in Massachusetts to practice how they saw fit. This eventual location chosen was Hadley, Massachusetts, and in 1659, a new community was built there. John Webster only enjoyed it for less than two years, for in the year 1661 he contracted a fever and died.

John and Agnes (Smith) Webster had nine children (five of whom were born in England, and four in the Colony). His descendants are numerous, and include lexicographer Noah Webster.
