44. Allan Harold Blount REYNOLDS [883] 70,190,191 was born on 13 Aug 1886 in Wavertree, Lancashire, England70,71,191,192 and died on 12 Mar 1949 in Birkenhead (Wirral), Merseyside, England,70,74 at age 62. Another name for Allan was Allan Harold Blount REYNOLDS.184

Birth Notes: His birth was registered at West Derby.

General Notes: His birth registration name was "Harold Allan B Reynolds". The 1891 Census list his age as 4. At the 1901 census he was age 14 living with parents. The 1911 census gave his name as; Allan Harold Blount Reynolds (born 1887, Liverpool), residence - Birkenhead. (Allan Harold Blount Reynolds is deemed correct name since the enumeration sheet was completed by Emily Blount, his mother).

Allan had a good education and was good mannered, well-spoken and carefully groomed. He and his sister, Emily Olive, managed their father's surgical instrument business in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead. The company, however, closed in the 1930's perhaps owing to financial difficulties associated with the recession and was taken over by the Mappin family (now Mappin and Webb, long established jewelers in North West England). Being without a profession, he was compelled to support his young family by working in Cammell Laird shipyard as a joiner's labourer. This social decline surely contributed to Allan's frustration throughout his later life.

As told by his grandson, he was a complex man, a wonderful craftsman in wood and metal work who could be charming. Apparently when his daughter Winifred was born he badly wanted a son, which may have contributed to his erratic and occasionally angry behaviour. Allan Reynolds lived through the First World War in which he lost a brother and which also decimated the young male population of Britain. He served as an Air Raid Warden in World War II. In Whitfield Street five houses were bombed and razed to the ground, including his mother's house.

Noted events in his life were:

Baptised: Our Lady of Good Help, 26 Aug 1886, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. 190 Address at Birth: 131 Salisbury Road, Aug 1886, Wavertree, Lancashire, England. 191 He worked as a Cabinet Maker in 1901 at Liverpool, Lancashire, England. 73 He resided at 52 Maybank Road, Tranmere in 1911 at Birkenhead, Cheshire, England. 184 At mother's residence. He worked as a Stationer's Packer in 1911. 184 He resided at 16 Whitefield Street in 1939 at Birkenhead, Cheshire, England.

Allan married Helena THOMPSON [1125],46,70,71,74,480 daughter of Cassimir Christopher THOMPSON [1313] 71,197,481,482 and Helena Elizabeth WARD [1314],46,480 in 1912 in Birkenhead (Wirral), Merseyside, England.46 Helena was born on 13 Aug 1890 in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England71,74,480 and died on 12 Jul 1974 in Birkenhead (Wirral), Merseyside, England,70,74 at age 83.

Marriage Notes: The Reynolds family disapproved his choice of wife, Helena Thompson, attributed at least in part to religious differences. His mother and sister were devout Catholics, and believed that Allan should not have married into a Protestant family. They also showed little interest in Allan's children, perhaps believing he had married unwisely. 197

Noted events in his life were:

He was employed as a member of a survey party for the Canadian National Railway between 9 Apr 1919 and 9 Sep 1919 in Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada. He arrived in northern Saskatchewan by train along with other members of the survey party. He and his mother invested almost all the money they had to purchase a canvas sleeping bag and a woolen blanket.

. He worked at a Trust Company beginning about Oct 1919 and 1921 at Winnipeg. He was paid $75 per month which was increased to $90.00. He had the misfortune of cashing two checks for a customer in the amount of $375.00 which bounced. His future didn't look bright because he was required to repay the debt out of his pay. While getting a haircut in Winnipeg, the barber who he previously knew in Elgin suggested he become a doctor and according to his autobiography decided then and there in the barber's chair to be a doctor.

. He said the plan was to take a course in normal school and become a teacher and then teach school and go to medical college on alternate years. He enrolled in a fifteen-week course teaching people to be country school third grade teachers. The course began September 1921 and ended December 1921. After teaching in two different country schools, he was back in Winnipeg the following August. On his first day home he met a MacLeans magazine salesman who had just sold a six-month subscription to his mother for one dollar. They had a discussion and became convinced selling subscriptions was a better way to earn money. He discontinued teaching school and put himself through pre-med and medical college selling subscriptions the next six summers for three dollars a year or five dollars for two years.

. He graduated from University of Manitoba Medical College on 15 May 1929 in Winnipeg, , Manitoba, Canada. 494,495,496 Obtaining a degree from Manitoba Medical College required seven years of study, two in pre-med at the University of Manitoba, four years at the Medical College and the final year as an intern. Pre-med tuition was $50 per year and medical school tuition was $100 per year. He began at the University of Manitoba in 1922 and in the fall of 1924 entered medical college and in 1928 interned at the Misericordia Hospital.

LITTLE, HENRY OWEN: 26; Record: 1st yr.; 2nd yr., pass. Spent four years at other things, banking, survey parties, Loan Co. etc. Was not attracted to Medicine by financial considerations. Works his way along; sells magazines in summer (Father is a preacher, brother is a banker and helps him some). Thinks he spent too much time in Latin in premed. Zoology most useful. Botany is a biological subject. Has not found Medicine too difficult, studies 2-3 hours a night, 4-5 hrs (nights?) a week. Spends a lot of time in church work (Young Church). Reads McLean's Magazine and the Bible. Thinks the Fundamentalists are hair-brained and all at sea. Is attracted by Pediatrics and General Surgery. A good deal of time is wasted in didactic lectures because there is no practical application of the knowledge thus acquired. Would like to have opportunities of following patients through the whole course of their illness. If it were not for financial handicaps would spend his time in research - say in T.B.

. After receiving his medical degree, he practiced for a while at Winnipeg and in December 1929 arranged to purchase a doctor's practice in the village of Manitou, a prosperous village a few miles from the border of North Dakota. His practice was slow and recalled that the better part of his income was derived from selling liquor prescriptions.

. His mother had sent him a "Doctor Wanted" newspaper clipping April 1930 for a "municipality" doctor, Wishart, Emerald Township #277, Saskatchewan. He replied and accepted a job one hundred miles north of Regina.
Wishart was then a small village founded in 1928. There was no place to practice medicine when he arrived but there was no great need for a fully equipped doctor's office since most of his work was making house calls around the 325 square mile municipality. He did however have a small borrowed office at a grain elevator which was not very convenient, no running water and only a chair and table for furniture. His salary was $375.00 a month and earned a little extra by treating patients outside the municipality and selling pills, tonics and cod liver oil.

Later the village counselors arranged to have an old meeting house moved to a lot on the main street and to sell him the lot and also two adjacent 50 foot lots. It was a rough building about eighty feet square with a potbellied stove. The building did not lend itself very well to being a doctor's office so he had a house-office combination constructed to the rear and used the meeting house as a waiting room. During the next six years he tended to the medical needs of the municipality. He delivered about 700 babies as during that time the birth rate was so high that half of the population was under the age of 15. He was required to periodically examine over 2000 children and keep them vaccinated. During a cold spell one winter a case of smallpox occurred in the next municipality requiring a rush job getting all the children and others vaccinated. One afternoon he visited a two room country school with 120 students. Two seventh grade girls swabbed arms with alcohol while he vaccinated. He had to work fast because his teamster had to keep the horses moving in the 40 below zero weather (there was no barn). He finished the job in one hour.

Social life was limited but he did keep company of a pretty doctor's daughter named Marjorie who lived in a village about forty miles away. They met in December 1930. She was seventeen and played the piano and they more or less went steady for about five years. There wasn't much to do; they went to country dances, go to her place and sing a few songs, drive around the country, etc. In December 1940 he visited her in Vancouver.

He would send money home to Winnipeg to support his mother and brother Robert who was attending Manitoba Medical College. When Robert graduated Jun 1936, the need to send money decreased. Desiring to get away from the edge of civilization, he resigned his position at Wishart and returned to Winnipeg with the intent of starting a practice there without much success. In September 1936 he left for England to study ophthalmology. He went back to Wishart in 1978 for the town's centennial celebration and was greeted as a "special guest".

. At the 1931 Census of Canada he was age 30, employed as a municipal doctor, $5000 annual income, enumerated at the hamlet of Wishart, Saskatchewan. 261 Also enumerated at residence [probably as visitors] were his mother, Emily Marie Little, age 60 and brother Robert Herriot Little, age 27, a Manitoba college student on vacation. At age 35, accompanied by his mother, he sailed to England from Montreal on the ship Dutchess of York and arrived 26 Sep 1936 at the Port of Liverpool, proposed address in the UK; 11 Ormiston Rd., New Brighton. 198,199,497 He began a six-month course in ophthalmology at Moorfields Hospital, London. In May 1937 he became a house surgeon at the Royal Westminster Eye Hospital for 18 months ending October 1938 and then for six weeks was temporary chief ophthalmologist to the British army. While in England he also visited relatives in Ireland. He and mother returned to the United States on the Empress of Britain arriving 22 Dec 1938 at the Port of New York.

. He worked as an Ophthalmologist between 1939 and 1945 at New York, , New York. He had agreed to take a position with the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital located at 140 East 54th Street. Before starting however, he and his mother returned to Winnipeg to see about things he had left in storage and visit sister, Dora. Upon return to New York City he had to take a lengthy New York Medical Board exam to get licensed. It also took nine months of bureaucracy to establish his American citizenship even though he was born in California. He was on the surgical staff of the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital and also on the staff of St Luke's Hospital. His starting pay was $300 per month. In December, 1940, he went to Vancouver, British Columbia, for ten days to visit an old girlfriend without telling the chief surgeon and was fired soon after his return. He then set up his own practice in the same building.

. He resided at 98-120 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills between 1940 and 1942 at New York, Queens, New York. At the 1940 census he was age 38 and listed as head of household, renting at $85/month. Also at residence were mother Emily (age 70) and brother Robert (age 36).
. He was a Deacon in the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. 498 The minister was John Sutherland Bonnell (known as "Sid"), a Canadian, who previously preached at Winnipeg. Rev Bonnell had built up the church to become one of the wealthiest Presbyterian churches in the world. Dr. Bonnell was born 1893 on Prince Edwards Island, Canada, died 1992 aged 99 at Roseburg, Oregon. Enlisted in Canadian Army in World War One, wounded twice in Europe, ordained in 1922. Gained a national reputation in his 26 years (1935 - 1962) as Pastor, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, sometimes called the "cathedral of Presbyterianism. He was a moderate theologically and an ardent supporter of the Rev. Billy Graham's first New York "crusade" in 1957. President of the New York Theological Seminary 1966 - 1969.
He was a member of the "Canadian Society" where met interesting people.

. Beginning in 1943 he was spending one or two days a week in Hudson, New York, helping his brother Robert who had recently taken over a medical practice. 499 He had rented an apartment at 308 E. 79th Street in Oct 1944. In the spring of 1945 he gave up his New York City practice and moved to Hudson to join his brother where he conducted a successful thirty-year medical practice in Ophthalmology located at 455 Warren Street.

. After his marriage to Jane Hoffmann and honeymoon, he rented an apartment for several months in June 1944 in a house located on Route 9H at Claverack, New York, about three miles from Hudson. 500 They returned to New York City December 1944 driving the Taconic Parkway, a day after a major snow storm, where their first child was born. Rather than immediately returning to Columbia County he sublet an apartment at Gramacy Park and 19th Street. In March 1945 he rented a brick cottage at Greenport just outside Hudson.

. He had a residence between Mar 1947 and Dec 1960 at Claverack, Columbia, New York. 209 He resided at "The Gables" between 7 Dec 1960 and 1978 at Kinderhook, Columbia, New York. "The Gables" is a Dutch colonial house which was heavily renovated and enlarged in 1928.    105    ii. Dr. Randal H. KINKEAD [650] 305,510 was born on 20 Jul 1929 in Lisburn, Antrim, Northern Ireland198 and died on 29 Jan 2014 in , , , England,511 at age 84.

Death Notes: Obituary - The Guardian: Our friend Randal Kinkead, who has died aged 84, was an actor who appeared in repertory and TV films during the 1950s and 60s. He then made a second successful career as a teacher, and was a founder-member of the Gay Left Collective.
Randal was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, into a Church of Ireland family. He was sent to Radley college in Oxfordshire, which he detested, but had a more enjoyable educational experience studying languages and literature at Trinity College Dublin in the late 40s. A fan of Irish drama and poetry, he had his first taste of acting in Ireland, touring the country with the then unknown Harold Pinter in the Anew McMaster repertory company in the early 50s.
That led to two decades of moving between repertory and film in the UK, as he supplemented his income by teaching and waiting at tables. He appeared in TV movies including Montserrat (1954), Othello (1955) and Blood Wedding (1959), as well as in two popular TV series in 1956, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Scarlet Pimpernel.
Acting provided Randal with a safe space in which to live a gay life in the 50s and 60s. Through the London arts gay scene of the 1960s, he met the novelist Angus Wilson and the sociologist and writer Michael Schofield, who encouraged him to further his academic studies. He took a BSc in sociology from Goldsmiths College, London, which equipped him for a long and successful teaching career, first at Seltec College in Lewisham, then at Paddington College (now City of Westminster College).
Working against privilege and elites, Randal was an inspiration to other teachers, arguing relentlessly for liberal education. His caring and gentle manner helped students to build their self-esteem. He was loved and respected for his warmth, compassion and great humanity, and though he moved in many different worlds, in all of them he was always congenial and sophisticated company.
In the early 70s, Randal moved in a new direction, working with the London Gay Liberation Front - where he met us - and becoming a founder-member of the Gay Left Collective, which produced the journal Gay Left, bringing socialist politics and gay activism together in print. Always a little cautious about being openly gay, he nevertheless regarded this work as one of the most significant turning points of his life.
Randal met his long-term partner, Sotiris (Mario) Demetriou, in 1977 and the two of them made a surprise move in later life to Syria, where they lived happily for four years, teaching English. He is survived by Mario, and by a nephew, Brian, and a niece, Claire.

General Notes: He traveled to New York 2 Jul 1954 on the Queen Mary. He gave his address in the US as: 85 Chester Circle, Raritan, New Brunswick, New Jersey, Passport - British #Lo.23989. In 2009 he was semi-retired and recently returned from Damascus, Syria, were he operated an English as a second language school for three years.

The school was founded in 1896 and is widely regarded as one of the top schools in South Africa and is part of the Elite Seven, an unofficial reference to seven private boys only high schools in South Africa.

Tribute, London Times published 18 Apr 1960, J. C. V. W. writes: You published a brief factual obituary of "Clem" Morgan. May I - as a friend, and as Warden of Radley, during his sub- wardenship - pay a brief tribute to a remarkable man? To say that he was a born teacher and a beloved house-master, true as that is, gives but part of the truth; the same can justly be said of many devoted men. But Clem was different somehow - and in my experience unique. He was a real lover of men - all sorts and kinds of men and boys, and fools and knaves and even pedants and prigs.
In part this was just natural kindness, largeness of heart: but it was not just undiscriminating easy-going tolerance - far from it. He had a very critical percipient intelligence, but he was himself very humble: and he had the gift of seeing the ridiculous in people - in his pupils, in their parents, in his friends and in himself - an innocent whole-hearted enjoyment of the absurd which altogether excluded malice or resentment, and made him so lovable. I have seen him laugh at himself till tears ran from his eyes. But if one was in need of help or advice he was the staunchest of friends and the wisest of counsellors. Radley felt that Michaelhouse was fortunate in their choice and so from all accounts events have proved abundantly.

Mr. A. K. Boyd writes: After a period at Liverpool College, Morgan went to Radley as an assistant master in 1928, where he became a house- master and sub-warden to the Rev. J. C Vaughan Wilkes. He was an inspiring teacher of classics, as well as an effective Rugby football coach, and his gift for friendship, combined with sound judgment, a natural authority and real sincerity of purpose gave him an unusual standing with both masters and boys. In 1953, at the -age of 50, he started on an unknown future and accepted the Rectorship of Michaelhouse. Though his bent was for personal relations rather than administration, his handling of the difficulties besetting a Church school in the Union, where political questions complicated the normal problems of headmastership, greatly increased his stature; and it fell to him to play a large part in the establishment of the Michaelhouse Trust. In one of his chief aims-to raise the standard of VI form work-he can be credited with a large measure of success. Countless friends and ex-pupils in England and South Africa will remember Clem Morgan with deep affection and respect. His wife, who contributed so much to the happiness which he enjoyed in his work survives him, with two sons and two daughters.

Death Notes: Obituary - IRISH TIMES, published Thursday, October 4, 1934: Captain John Rowlands (An Appreciation). There were few better known men, certainly none better loved, around the coast of Ireland than Captain John Rowlands of the Irish Lights steamer Alexandra, who died last week at the comparatively early age of 43 years. For two years he had been in bad health, but, even so, his death was a shock to the Irish Lights Service. He was given a sailors funeral on the 27th ult. by his ship's company and the crew of the Isolda; the Commissioners of the Irish Lights, headed by the Right Hon. Mr. A. Jameson, accompanied by the Earl of Meath, Mr. R. N. Guinness, Dr. Watson, etc., were there and the cortège to Dean's Grange Cemetery was most imposing.

Commodore of the Irish Lights fleet, he had been in the service from 1910, and since 1915 had commanded in turn three of the Board's steamships (Irene, Teraght and Alexandra) "to the entire satisfaction of the Commissioners" in the words of the resolution of the Irish Lights Board passed at a meeting on the 26th ult. The resolution went on to say -"They desire to place on record their sense of the great loss which they and the Irish Lighthouse Service as a whole have sustained by the deprivation of his invaluable services, and desire to convey their sympathy to the members of his family in their bereavement."

Captain Rowlands was born to the sea. He was the elder son of Captain John Rowlands, who for over forty years was pier master at Kingstown while the old City of Dublin Steam Packet Company held the mail contract. John Rowlands wend to sea early, serving his apprenticeship in a "Windjammer". He took some time to "go into steam" and when he did there was no more competent ship's officer. He took out his Extra Master's "ticketet" and the crews who served under him and implicit trust in his luck and his judgment, which had a testing trial during the war through the submarine campaign.

Burial Notes: He was buried at Deans Grange Cemetery.

News Article, Irish Times, published 28 July 1900: GALLANTRY OF A BOY // On Tuesday, a very small boy, names O'Flarty, was sailing a toy boat on the slip in the harbour of refuge, at Holyhead, when, it is presumed, he accidently fell into the water. No one seems to have seen the accident, but shortly afterwards a boy about 14 years of age, names John Rowlands, son of the Kingstown Piermaster, observed an object floating on the surface of the water. At first, he thought it was an inanimate object, but seeing it move, he concluded it was a human being, as what appeared to be a head was noticeable above the water. He immediately took off his coat and jumped into the water. On swimming to the boy he seemed lifeless, as he was totally unconscious of the presence of his gallant preserver. Rowlands succeeded in getting him safely ashore, and animation was soon restored.

Death Notes: At the 1921 Census of England his son, Donald Kenneth Blower, age four months, born Steatham, London SW, was ennumerated as "Visitor" with notation "Father Dead"

General Notes: His father left his estate to second son, James Wingfield Blower, then aged fourteen. Peter Blower, nephew, said he was unaware his father had an elder brother until his late teens / early 20's when his father mentioned him and that perhaps he may have been in Scotland.

William was aged twenty-three when is father died and for an unknown reason cut out of any inheritance. His brother was specified consistently in father's Estate Inventory as James Wingfield Blower the son and sole next of kin of the deceased. Something must have happened to cause his father on his death bed will to specifically designated William's younger brother as next of kin - perhaps something to do with the circumstances of his mother's burial under police warrant three years earlier in 1912.

Noted events in his life were:

He resided at 111 Bedford Hill in 1914 at Balham, London, England. 559 He resided at 40 Tenham Avenue in Oct 1916 at Streatham Hill, London, England. 560 He worked as a Motor Engineer in Oct 1916. 560

Marriage Notes: They were married at The Church of St. Mary. She was actually age 32 (not 26 as indicated by the marriage registration) when she married William Kenneth Blower and he was actually age 22 (not 24). Both fibbed about their age to narrow the age differential probably for the benefit of the two families. The marriage was witnessed by; Dorothy Freeman (sister), Percy Winterton (brother-in-law) and H. Freeman (probably her mother). 411

He enlisted in the RAF 30 Oct 1934 and was killed while on active service 12 Sep 1942. His rank / service # were; Leading Aircraftman (LAC) / 518304. 561,567,568 He enlisted in the RAF just six days after his eighteenth birthday and advanced from Leading Aircraftman (LAC) to Temporary Corporal and to Temporary Sergeant. Because they were temporary promotions he retained the permanent rank of LAC.

He was posted to Aden in late 1938 before on start of WW2. His service record shows he was hospitalized a number of times beginning 1937 at Cranwell, England, for two months and the rest at Aden where each lasted for about two weeks. The record does not show the reason for his hospital stays but obviously were not serious enough for him to be discharged as unfit for service. In Sep 1940 he was assigned to "CGS Sheikh Othman" (Central Gliding School) for three months. In Aug 1941 he was assigned to the 94th Squadron (Fighter, Gloster Gladiator) at Sheik Othman, Aden, and in Apr 1942 to the "106 M.V." (Unit abbreviation not defined). On 12 Aug 1942 he was assigned to Port of Embarkation ("P of Em.") and on 12 Sep 1942 was killed by enemy action while at sea on board the H.M.T. Laconia, a 601 foot British troopship (formerly a Cunard ocean liner) that was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-156 six hundred miles from the coast of Africa.

The Laconia was carrying 1,800 Italian POWs, some 80 British women and children, 103 Free Poles and 268 British soldiers guarding the prisoners, and a 136-man crew; in total some 2,700 people. Realizing there were POWs and civilians on-board, and that they faced certain death without rescue, U-Boat Commander Werner Hartenstein (Duken) made a decision that went against the orders of Nazi high command. The U-boat surfaced and Hartenstein instructed his men to save as many of the shipwrecked survivors as they could. U-156 crammed some 200 people on board the surface-level submarine, took another 200 in tow in four lifeboats, and tried to give relief to the remaining shipwrecked who surround the U-boat in some 20 lifeboats and a number of small rafts. Hartenstein also attempted to dive with all the survivors on board and, though this put the submarine into a crash dive, control was regained and it resurfaced. He also had a Red Cross flag displayed and a message sent to the Allies to organize a rescue of the survivors. The Italian prisoners were taken off U-156 by another U-boat. Three days later, they were spotted by the inexperienced crew of an American B-24 Liberator bomber flying from Ascension Island, which attacked them - the British commander in Sierra Leone had informed the Americans to look for Laconia survivors but not of the submarine's rescue efforts. Soon after the attack U-156 resumed her hunting duties, leaving behind the lifeboats with the British survivors to be picked up by a Vichy naval surface ship sent by admiral Karl Dönitz - whilst admiring Hartenstein's actions, Dönitz also reluctantly composed the Laconia Order to other U-boat commanders not to rescue survivors in future. The French ship arrived, whilst one lifeboat had left the others to make for the coast of west Africa, which it eventually reaches. Dönitz awards Hartenstein the Ritterkreuz and offered him a desk job at naval command. Preferring to remain with his men, Hartenstein refused and later in the war U-156 was sunk with no survivors.

Ronald Kenneth Blower was listed as a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force, Commonwealth War Dead, memorialized at the Alamein Memorial, Egypt. Casualty detail stated he was the son of William Kenneth and Edith Amy Blower; nephew of Mrs. D. Foster, of Balham, London.

78. James Wingfield BLOWER [951] 418,419 was born on 23 May 1901 in Tindharia, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India419,420 and died on 16 Jan 1978 in Bromley, Kent, England,23,419 at age 76.

His father's will dated 15 Jul 1915 mentioned James Wingfield Blower as "second son". The will stated; I also will that the guardianship of my second son James Wingfield Blower revert to the Administrator General and be not passed on by him to another. Despite the requirement not to pass on the guardianship to another, it was recited many times in the Inventory that payments were made to his maternal uncle William Boyd Monk Esq. as guardian of the person and property of James Wingfield Blower… (Perhaps the order was amended).

He was listed on ships' manifest (City of Karachi) traveling first class from Calcutta to England arriving 6 Jun 1916. His name was given as "Master Blower, age 15 and a student. He was listed on a ships' manifest dated 3 Sep 1920 traveling first class from England to Calcutta. He gave his occupation as "student" and age 19. In 1940 he operated a highly successful company dealing in metals at 1940 Glasgow, Scotland, but the business was killed off by the war. Too old to enlist in the military or be called up he managed to get into the Royal Indian Naval reserve and went out to India in 1944 for about a year. After the war and back in England he had difficulties establishing British citizenship because he was born in India (after India became independent the UK government passed a Nationalities Act which basically gave people the nationality of their place of birth unless they could prove British parents). In 1940 he had submitted an Application for Birth or Baptismal Certificate in the name of James Wingfield Blower, date of birth 23 May 1901, place of Birth Tindharia (near Darjeeling), India. He was not certain of the exact date of baptism stating "approx. 1906-1908" "in private house at Mr. Hembry, 65 Malone Ave, Belfast", Religious sect Methodist, father: Thomas Henry Blower of London, profession: Tea Planter (at birth), later Paint Manufacturer, Calcutta, Mother Emily Monk. He signed the application as J.W. Blower, 173, Tantallon, Glasgow, Scotland.

He was reported to have been seriously overweight, a heavy smoker and very fond of tea. He was a very good story teller & very keen on India.
