1. John William MAPPIN, son of Walter Sandell MAPPIN 1 and Henrietta SMITH,1 was born on 17 Sep 1855 in Birmingham, Warwick, England,2,3 was christened on 19 Nov 1855 in Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick, England,2 died on 8 Mar 1920 in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia4,5 at age 64, and was buried in Athens, Clarke, Georgia.6

Death Notes: Death Notice - The Atlanta Constitution, 9 Mar 1920: John Mappin, 65 years of age, died Monday morning at the residence, 124 Oakland Avenue. The body will be sent to Athens, Ga. He is survived by five sons, A.S., G.W., F.H., J.F., and Walter Mappin, and one sister, Mrs. H.L. Thurmond.

Burial Notes: Oconee Hill Cemetery.

General Notes: His father was Walter Sandell Mappin, the seventh of eleven children born 15 Sep 1829 to John and Ann (Jackson) Mappin. He was christened "Walter", the name Sandell being afterwards assumed, a practice not uncommon at the time to add cachè to one's name. (John Mappin had his shop in Birmingham, England, and a neighboring shop owner was David Sandell, a Stationer & Rag Merchant). Walter's early profession was that of a Surgical Instrument Maker, same as his father, but in later years was a civil / mechanical engineer. He appeared to be financially secure notwithstanding being declared bankrupt in 1865, and lived in comfortable circumstances (Census records show he employed live-in domestic servants, three at the 1871 census).

The first record of John William Mappin was his birth registration Oct/Dec 1855 at the District of Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He had two siblings, an older brother Joseph Sandell Mappin who died in 1863 at age nine and his younger sister, Louisa Mappin who died in 1884 at age 27 (never married). His mother, Henrietta died 1859 when he was only age four. He had nine step-siblings from his father's second marriage in 1863.

He appeared in the 1861 English census (age four) living at 31 Bull Street, Birmingham, England, with his widowed father, older brother and a house servant. At the 1871 census (age 15) he was a pupil boarding at a school in Brixton, a district in the London Borough of Lambeth in south London. The 1881 census showed him married, but boarding away from his wife at 27 Manor Street Clapham Surrey, occupation; "Assistant in Grocery Trade". His wife Ann Elizabeth (age 24), son John Walter Mappin (age 2) and daughter Annie Louise Mappin (age 3 months) were living with her parents at Wroxham, Norfolk, England. Ann Elizabeth was the third of twelve children born to Robert and Elizabeth (Ives) Waterson. The family probably lived in near poverty as her father was an agricultural laborer and the 1871 census list her at age 14 employed as a "Char Woman".

Walter Sandell Mappin (also known as W. Sandell Mappin and Sandell Mappin) visited the United States at least seven times between 1879 and 1892. He was one of the directors (and Secretary) in the Hamby Mountain Gold Mines, Limited, a company registered 5 Nov 1886 at London, England, with a capital of £300,000 in £1shares for the purpose of acquiring and working the Nacoochee, the Reynolds, the Parkes, the Frazier, and the Richardson placer gold mines. The properties consisted of about 3,500 acres located near the present-day town of Helen, White County, Georgia. The company's annual report dated 30 Sep 1887 said the properties were transferred 14 Mar 1887. The report further said Mr. Sandell Mappin had accompanied the chairman on a trip to Georgia and that he (Sandell) remained to commence operations at the mines. (They arrived at the at the Port of New York 21 Feb 1887 on the ship Alaska.)

John William Mappin accompanied his father and the Chairman. (Ships' manifest stated he was second cabin, two pieces of luggage and occupation as Miner. His age was stated as 21 but was age 32.) The Mappins saw to it that the canals and flumes were cleaned out and repaired and two giants (high pressure water cannons) put to work. A third giant was subsequently purchased and all three were reported to be at work. The mill was moved up the branch near the mine and remodeled in such a manner as to allow an addition of twenty stamps (rock crushers), if needed. John William Mappin was the Superintendent however his father remained actively involved as he again traveled to the United States arriving at the Port of New York 19 September 1887 on the ship "Aurana" (accompanying his daughter-in-law Elizabeth and her four young children), 9 Apr 1888 and 29 Jul 1892.

A newspaper article, New York Times dated April 21, 1889, stated: RICH GOLD FIND IN GEORGIA (Atlanta, Ga., April 20) - The largest find ever yet made in this state in a gold mine was made yesterday by John P. and Dilmor Thurmond, hands working for the Hamby Mountain Company, Limited, an English corporation, which has been mining for some time in White County. The nugget weighs two pounds two ounces four pennyweight Troy, fine solid gold. The Hamby Mine however was unable to bring out enough gold to make a profit and the depression of the early 1890's ended whatever chance the company had of raising more working capital. On 31 Dec 1895 Hamby Mountain Gold Mines, Ltd., was declared defunct by the International Stock Exchange, London.

John William Mappin went back to England at least once for a visit returning November 1889 on the ship Teutonic. A descendant reported family lore that John William Mappin was motivated to come to America over a family falling out because his wife was below his station in life. His grandfather, John Mappin who died 13 Sep 1881 was supportive however, leaving John William an inheritance of £50. The family was probably also scandalized because their first son, John Walter Mappin, appears to have been conceived out of wedlock. These circumstances probably contributed to him bringing his wife and young children to Georgia six months after his arrival to begin a permanent new life.

He was enumerated in the Georgia 1890 Property Tax Digest (558th Militia District (Tesnatee), Post Office - Parks, White County) as Superintendent of the "H.M.G.M.L.D" (Hamby Mountain Gold Mines, Limited) listing 14 parcels (2,632 acres), valued at $10,000. He was also listed as owning 150 acres valued at $135 ($410 including Personal Estate). Tesnatee is presently a populated place in White County located southwest of Cleveland on highway 115. He was living in White County until at least 1893 where his sons Arthur, George and Frank were born. A descendant reported that he ran the company store and would give credit to miners that came down from the hills, never to see them again.

By the 1900 census John William Mappin had moved 40 +/- miles south to Commerce (Militia District 255) near present day Harmony Grove, Jackson County, Georgia, where he was renting and gave his occupation as farmer. He was also employed as a mail carrier, salary $720 / year in 1905. The Atlanta Constitution published a letter to the editor 8 Sep 1905 titled "Let the R. F. D. Carriers Report On Cotton Conditions" signed; John Mappin, Carrier 13, Commerce, GA. The letter was fairly long, well written and suggested mail carriers, in the course of their delivery duties, could efficiently gather accurate crop information at lower cost then was presently the case (...each carrier could observe every state of the cotton industry from the preparation of the soil, planting the crop, cultivation of same and by reason of his daily travel could see and ascertain together the condition from time to time and report to the department as and when required ...)

John William Mappin died 8 Mar 1920 (age 64) at 124 Oakland Street, Atlanta. His wife, Ann Elizabeth died 14 Jun 1918 (age 61). Both were buried at the Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens, Georgia. His father Walter Sandell Mappin died in 1921 (age 92) at Southwark, London, England.

His daughter and son-in-law, Annie Louise and Wilborn Weldon, lived nearby. At the 1910 census he was "Bookkeeper" at a plumbing company". General Notes: World War II stories: John Mappin, by Lily Gordon (lgordon@ledger-enquirer.com), 22 Sep 2009:
At the age of 19, John Mappin joined the Navy and was assigned to a PT boat in the South Pacific.
PT stands for "Patrol Torpedo," and the boats were armed to attack larger ships but small and quick enough to evade attack.
Mappin was a first class motor machinist responsible for keeping the PT boat's engine running.
The Atlanta native served from 1942 to 1946, and he remembers one night in particular.
His boat was traveling close to the beach, as it often did, looking to intercept Japanese soldiers skipping from island to island. Suddenly, the crew was drawing heavy fire.
"Always it's scary when someone's shooting at you," says Mappin, now 86. "Now it doesn't seem all that scary but then it did because you didn't know what or who was out there. We didn't know if it was one person shooting at us or 100 people shooting at us. We didn't know."
Three men were killed, and the remaining eight began to swim toward support vessels. Besides the gunfire, the crew had other concerns.
"It was a pretty good swim," Mappin recalls. "It didn't bother me, but there were two or three who were bleeding and they were worried about sharks."
Some 63 years after leaving the service, Mappin says he's now ready to say he enjoyed his time in the Navy.
"You look back on it now, it was fun, but back then it wasn't fun," he says. "When you went out you didn't know whether you were coming back or not."
