32. George COLLIER [699],,139,140 son of William COLLIER [720] 282,283,284 and Abigail GOODWIN [721] 282,285 was born on 14 Jan 1793 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut,140,286 died on 16 Sep 1864 in Durant, Cedar, Iowa74,287 at age 71, and was buried in Westfield Cemetery, Westfield, Ohio.142

Death Notes: From the Journal of Mary A. C. [Collier] Norton, 25 Sep 1864, written from home on their farm; Center Grove near Durant, Cedar County, Iowa: "Dear Journal; the whole of summer has passed and not one word have I told you of what was passing. Let me see. My dear Father [George Collier] and Mother [Hepzibah] came to see me the 15th of June. I think I can see them now as they came in looking so happy and joyous. Mother was looking in good health, but Father did not look very well. He xxxx and they both, in fact, seemed to enjoy the first few weeks highly, but Father gradually began to decline. Went to the physician and procured medicine, which did not seem to do their office. That was in the beginning of harvest. The Dr. commenced visiting, but for a long time grew worse. So he did not leave his bed. At last Brother James came out to see him. About that time there seemed to be a change for the better, so he could sit in his chair a good part of the day, but he did not continue to improve. His disease seemed to take a new form and shape every day. He would come out and take his meals, so we did not consider him [ ? ] [dangerous?], he was taken from us so suddenly did the stroke come. This was September 16th and on the 19th Mother and Charlie [Charles W. Norton - son-in-law] started with remains [to Medina, Ohio]. I received a letter from him last evening stating they had arrived safely."

General Notes: In 1816 George Collier came to the "Western Reserve of Ohio" shortly after it was opened for settlement. He had been hired by two large land holders to do survey work in an area south of present-day Cleveland, now known as Westfield Center, Medina County. He fell in love with the territory and in 1818 brought his wife Hephzibah Steele and son Lemuel from Hartford, Connecticut, to homestead. He arrived about one year after the first settlers, many of whom were from the Hartford area. George built a house in 1826 about one mile southeast of the village to accommodate his growing family. (His house is the oldest surviving original homestead in Westfield Center. It has been well preserved by its present owners who in 1994 conducted an extensive renovation to being the house back close to its 1826 condition inside and out.) He was one of the stanch citizens of the community and an organizer of the Congregational Church Society in 1834. Mr. Collier helped organize the Ohio Farmers' Insurance Company and in April 1848 became the company's first President.

WESTFIELD HISTORY: James Fowler, an original land owner, came from Westfield, Massachusetts; hence the name Westfield was chosen when the new town was organized in 1820. In 1826 Mr. Fowler decided to found a village at the township center. Four acres were set aside for a public square and then fourteen acres on each side of the square, which were split into lots with sixty-foot frontage, an arrangement which today resembles an old New England town. In 1827 a nearby post office was established and given the name Leroy by the Postmaster General. In 1836 the post office was moved to the village center and thus the name Leroy went with it. In 1971 the Village of Leroy was changed back to Westfield Center by a referendum of the residents.

WESTERN RESERVE: King Charles II of England in 1662 granted the colony of Connecticut a charter for land extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the "Great South Sea" (Pacific Ocean). After the American Revolution in 1786, Connecticut gave up its western lands, but reserved a portion of land in what was to become Northeastern Ohio. Known as the Western Reserve of Connecticut, the area was settled largely by people from Connecticut. Connecticut ceded the Western reserve to the federal government in 1800.

Death Notes: He died at age 52. (g.s.)

General Notes: In 1836 George Moseley purchased for $1,000 from his father, his home and land on Main Street, Glastonbury, opposite the old meeting house green (the Griswold-Moseley House, 1936 Main Street). He was a farmer and also operated a tavern at his father's residence. At the 1840 census he was enumerated as head of household containing a total of fourteen persons, including eight males, five females and one "Free Colored Persons" female age 10-23 who was probably a house servant. His father, John Moseley, was enumerated at a separate household. At the 1850 census he was farmer and valued is real estate at $6,000. Also at residence in addition to his family was Emily Moseley, age 46, (believed to be his cousin - daughter of Abner) who valued her real estate at $3,000.

Over succeeding generations Moseley properties in Glastonbury probably become so subdivided that further divisions were no longer practical. John, the eldest son of George and Mary (Wright) Moseley inherited his father's house and farm. By the mid-1850s his other four sons had removed to western New York. George, James and Charles went to Cazenovia, NY, and then by 1856 to Wisconsin. William was in Syracuse (not far from Cazenovia), served with some distinction during the Civil War and later was a New York State Assembly member representing a district in Brooklyn.

Death Notes: Death Notice - Hartford Daily Courant, 25 Mar 1870: STANCLIFF - In Portland, March 23, Joseph Stancliff, aged 81 yesrs.

Burial Notes: He was buried at the Trinity Church Cemetery.

General Notes: Joseph appears to be the first of the main line to spell his last name Stancliff (previously Stanclift). At the 1860 census he was a retired blacksmith and gave the value of his real estate as $24,000 and personal estate as $6,000. The 1870 census was taken about three months after Joseph died at age 81. Electra, now age 76, was living in her own household with three servants and could well be termed "a wealthy widow".

Joseph's ancestors lived in and around what is now known as Portland, Middlesex County, Connecticut, and generally were well known and prominent citizens. His pedigree is as follows:

1st Generation (Parents): James Stanclift (1761 - 1831) & Meribah Welles (1767 - 1844)
2nd Generation (Grandparents): James Stanclift (1728 -1789) & Sussanah Bunce (1733 - 1807)
3rd Generation (Great Grandparents): James Stanclift (1691 - 1772) & Abigail Biven (1692 - 1781)
4th Generation (2X Grandparents): James Stanclift (1639 - 1712 & Mary Tinker Waller (1653 - 1712). James Stanclift was born 1639 in England, very probably near the town of Halifax, Yorkshire, England. He probably arrived in Connecticut about 1684 at age 46 and lived first at Lyme, New London County, CT. He married about 1685 Mary (Tinker) Waller, the wealthy widow and in Dec 1685 purchased 26 acres of land on the North East shore of "the great pond" now called Rogers Lake. He was a stone mason by trade and in 1686 received permission from the selectmen of Lyme, to make "a clamp of bricks" on town land alongside the River. He also cut gravestones for many of the most influential families in the area. The buff sandstone in Lyme was very close in color and texture to the stone from the Shibden Valley in Halifax where he was born.

On February 24, 1686/7 the town of Middletown approved an agreement made by the selectmen with James Stanclift, concerning the building the chimneys, and other stone work, and that when work finished he was to receive a parcel of land "upon the rocks". The offer of land was the customary method employed by colonial townships to entice to their area, the tradesmen needed to establish and maintain a productive and growing community. James accepted the offer, divested himself of his land in the Lyme area and; probably by the summer of 1689, moved his family to Middletown, CT.

He received his grant of land on May 3, 1690 and two days later sought to purchase additional land under town ownership. The request was taken up at the May 5, 1690 Middletown Town Meeting. The minutes of that meeting stated "At the same towns Meeting the towns Granted Mr James Standclift A parcell of Land on the East side the Great River neare his hous in quantity about Six Acres Lying Northward from his hous coming noe farther Southward than square with his house to have six Acres if it be within that Compass and being noe damage to highways ". James Stanclift had already built a house "upon the rocks" on three acres previously purchased in a location very near the place that was to be granted to him in payment for his work.

Middletown town boundaries at the time extended far beyond the settled portion on the left bank of the Connecticut River ("the Great River"). Residents used the land across the river on the east side for crops and grazing, but returned to the safety of the Town every night. James Stanclift was the first white man to build a house and live "on the est side of the great river" among the Wangunk Indians.

James opened the Stanclift Brownstone Quarry, on a bluff overlooking the river where the Triassic brownstone overhung the river. The stone was easy to work and adapted to the finest carving needs, but most important it was found in few areas other than the concentration in the area where he settled. He lived and worked in this location for over twenty years, until death in 1712. For thirteen of those years the Stanclift and one other family were the only permanent residents on the east side of the river. By 1710 however, there were at least twenty seven families living on the East side of the Great River.

In front of the Portland Town Hall stands a Connecticut Historical Commission sign which states that the area first called East Middletown, later Chatham and finally Portland, Connecticut, was "...famous for it's brownstone which was quarried here for over two hundred years. ", and that ….the first permanent settler, James Stancliff; a stone cutter, built his home here about 1690. Stone was shipped to Boston and New York and is the source of many of the famed brownstone houses in both locations.

James also cut gravestones and his work can be found in many areas but mostly those that can be reached by water that allowed for transport by boat. He made stones for many of the most prominent men in the Connecticut Colonies. The "Tablestone" was the monument of choice for the very wealthy families of that day, and most tablestones in New England were cut from East Middletown brownstone. A tablestone monument was constructed with a slab of stone measuring about three foot by six foot and four or five inches thick set upon the ground over the grave, then heavy carved legs of table height were set upon this base to support a second slab of the same dimensions as the base stone, completing the "Table". The top stone was finished with a decorative edge like a molding, and bore the engraved inscription.

Stone for gravestones had to be removed from the quarry before the frost came in the fall, taken under cover, and "seasoned" before being shaped and engraved. There was a "grain" to the stone and the skill of the early cutters is proven today by the number of brownstone gravestones that stand in fine condition, without shaling. James probably worked on gravestones over the long winter months when it was impossible to work within the quarry, itself. The craft was passed from father to son and both his sons, William and James were cutting stone at an early age.

James Stanclift signed documents with his "Mason's Mark" and no document has been discovered with his written signature. There is a question that James was able to read and write. His printing on gravestones was exceptionally accurate for the time suggesting he may have had a scriber print out the epitaphs as a guide, for his stones had far better spelling than that of his sons.

Both James Stanclift, and wife Mary, seem to have been casualties of the influenza epidemic that swept through New England in 1712. James died October 2, 1712, and Mary followed on December 30, 1712. They are the only members of the family buried in Riverside Cemetery, Middletown because there was no cemetery in East Middletown at the time. They are buried under stones cut by their son, William.

James lies under a Tablestone with an unusual tripod arrangement of legs. There is a fairly large inset missing on this stone, but the inscription was carved across the entire face of the stone. Even with the missing inset, it is possible to interpret the inscription as the wording favored by each carver, makes the inscription carved by that man predictable. Above the inscription is a crude skull carved by William, son of James, identical to those William had engraved on other stones.

Inscription:
Here Lieth Te Body
Of Mr James Stanclift
Who Deceased October
The 2 1712 Aged About
73 Years

Nearby is an upright stone for Mary Stanclift, upon which her son, William, carved this tribute- "HERE LYES ONE BEREAVED OF LIFE, SHE WAS A TENDER MOTHER AND A LOVING WIFE".

At the 1860 census his daughter Jane was listed as "Jennie A". He gave the value of his real estate as $1,600 and personal estate as $3,500. At the 1900 census, at age 85, no employment was listed and stated ha had been married 67 years.

Mr. Newell is one of the most venerable and highly respected citizens of Middletown. He and his esteemed wife have learned the art of "growing old gracefully", and though both are approaching the eighty ninth milestone in life's journey their faculties are unimpaired and so well preserved that they attend to every duty that a quarter of a century ago was theirs. Their married life extends through a period of nearly seventy years, a remarkable period of matrimonial blessedness, which statistics show, falls to but one couple in a million.

Charles A. Newell was born January 29, 1814, in Whitneyville, near New Haven, Conn., and he was ten years old when his parents located to Middletown. While he was but a boy, living at Whitneyville, coming home from school one winter's day, the great inventor, Eli Whitney, accompanied by his wife, came along in his sleigh, and, taking young Newell into the conveyance, engaged in conversation. This is a cherished incident in the career of Mr. Newell. The family located at South Farms in Middletown and Charles lived with Ebenezer Markham, and, while an inmate of his home, attended the Johnson Land District School for two winter terms. In the spring of 1828 he went to work for the Sanseer Manufacturing Co., a salary the first year, of thirty dollars, and his board. This was increased the second year by Five dollars. There he worked five years, and then went to New Hartford, where he worked for a short time. For the next seven years he worked in various towns, and made a long stay at New Haven. He came from that city of Middletown, and here became interested in the Sanseer Company, which was then branching out in several new enterprises. He had charge of a department, and retained his interest in the factory for ten years, though he put in only the first five years of that time in active work in the enterprise.
