General Notes: Abigail's pedigree is as follows:
1st Generation (Parents): Ozias Goodwin (~1729 - 1789) & Mary Steele (1729 - 1791). Mary Steel was the aunt of Hepsibah Steele who was the wife of George Collier (1793 - 1864)
2nd Generation (Grandparents): Ozias Goodwin (1689 - 1776) & Martha Williamson (1700 - 1777).
3rd Generation (Great Grandparents): Nathaniel Goodwin (1637 - 1714) & Elizabeth Pratt.
4th Generation (2X Grandparents): Ozias Goodwin (1596 - 1683) & Mary Woodward. Ozias Goodwin was born in County Essex, England, in 1596. He married Mary Woodward, the daughter of Robert Woodward, of Braintree, County Essex, about 1628. Their son William was born in 1629 and came with his parents to Boston in 1632. Ozias' brother William Goodwin and his family came with Ozias on the 1632 voyage of the Lion and his story follows this family.

The Goodwins all went to Newtown in 1632 and then went to Hartford in 1636, where both brothers were original proprietors. When Reverend Thomas Hooker died and there was a split in the First Church in Hartford, many parishioners moved up the Connecticut River Valley, some to establish Hadley, Massachusetts. Ozias signed an agreement with the others on Apr 18, 1659, to move with them. However, when his brother William, Elder John White and others went, he stayed in Hartford, where he spent the rest of his life.

Ozias and Mary had their second child, Nathaniel, in Hartford in 1637 and then a daughter names Hannah was born there in 1639. Ozias was made a Freeman in 1669 and he died in the spring of 1683. The inventory of his estate was taken 3 April 1683. Unlike his brother William, he had kept a low profile in the community and did not seem to be involved in town, church or military affairs. The name of Goodwin was prominent in Hartford and the surrounding area, originating with Ozias.

Abigail married William COLLIER [720] 282,283,284 in , , New York.488 William was born on 20 Jan 1755 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut74,485 and died on 21 Dec 1815 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut285,286 at age 60.

General Notes: They had a family of 13 children, and lived to see them all married and settled in life. Hepsibah was the youngest. Lemuel Steele was descended from John Steele an original proprietor of Hartford, Connecticut:
2rd Generation (Parents): Daniel Steele (1697-1770) & Mary Hopkins (1702/3-1796).
3rd Generation (Grandparents): Samuel Steele (1652-1710) & Mercy Bradford (1660-1720). Her grandfather was William Bradford, a Mayflower Pilgrim.
4th Generation (Great-Grandparents): John Steele Jr. (1624-1653) & Mary Mercy Warner)
5th Generation (2rd Great-Grandparents): John Steele (1591-1655) & Rachel Talcott (1602-1653): John Steele was among the early pioneers in the settlement of a New England. He was a native of England, probably Braintree a village near London, Essex County, and from a family of yeomen farmers. He came to New England with his wife Rachael and children and was living at Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1630. He was a proprietor of Cambridge, Mass, 1632; made freeman 1634; and elected representative from Cambridge 1635. A George and Henry Steele were also proprietors at the same time. No additional information has been found regarding Henry Steel. George however was John Steele's elder brother and came to Massachusetts with him, was made proprietor in 1634. Cambridge was the colony's capital and grew rapidly creating a shortage of pasture land which motivated a portion of the population, including a number of prominent citizens, to seek another location. There was also a dislike of some regulations which were thought to circumscribe their rights as freemen. In the autumn of 1635 John Steele, accompanied by his brother George led a small group of pioneers south through the rugged, pathless wilderness, to a new location on the Connecticut River. Arriving late in the season, they endured the hardships and trials of a severe winter; with the labors of clearing forest, constructing crude dwellings, securing food and fending off warlike natives. They persevered while other expeditions during the same season failed and in the ensuing summer the main portion of their company arrived with their minister; to their new home - a town which was to become Hartford and the third of the colony of New England. He stayed in Hartford six years before moving to the new village of Farmington in 1645, just a few miles west. His home lot in Hartford in 1639 was on the main street, just north of the present Athenaeum.
He was an active member of their church, member of the legislative, deputy of the General Court many times from 1639 to 1657 and one of eight representatives appointed in 1636 to govern Connecticut and the first secretary of the colony 1636 -1639. For nearly 20 years he was also recorder of the town of Hartford, and for a time recorder of the town of Farmington. His will, dated January 30, 1663- 4, valued his estate at £182. He died at Farmington November 25, 1665. His brother George Steele died in 1663 and was said to have been "very old".

General Notes: Daniel Davis was of Welsh descent, a weaver by trade, and also a stone and brick mason. He served in the Revolutionary War and after the war went to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and subsequently married Sarah (Elizabeth) Albright probably in 1795 when he was 49. Sarah was said to have been 17 at the time and born in Hesse (Germany). They lived in Lancaster County until after the birth of a number of their children. The first recorded birth date of any of their children was 1800 and about 1819 he moved his family to Salem, Ohio.

Sara Elizabeth died 11 Mar 1828 near Salem, Ohio, and is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in the Brinker Settlement in Columbiana County, Ohio. At the time of her death Daniel was 81 years old and faced caring for five young children including twins three years of age. According to family lore, he kept the family together until the twins were about ten years old, and then he found foster homes for them. Later after a visit to Pennsylvania, he returned to Ohio and then went to Indiana with a son where he turned to his trade of weaving. About 1843 he moved to Carroll County, Indiana. He died 45 days short of 102nd birthday, November 1848, in or near Columbiana County, Indiana. The exact place of his burial is unknown.

Daniel Davis was never able to claim his Revolutionary War pension because he waited until he was nearly ninety-nine years old and the records were destroyed when the British burned Washington, DC in 1814. He gave the following declaration in Oct 1845 to a Justice of the Peace in Clinton County, Indiana, to prove his pension claim "I was born in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. I have no record of my age. The church in which my register of Birth and Baptism having been destroyed and the family record in my Bible having been destroyed by fire with my son's house. From the best of my knowledge and comparison of my oldest child's age, with other events I will be ninety-nine years of age on the 25th of December next. I was living in Reading, Pennsylvania at the time I was called into the service of the United States Army. I was enlisted on the 4th day of July 1778 (I believe) 10 Regiment U.S. Infantry, 1st Lieut. Jacob Free, 2nd Lieut. Jacob Livergood, Sgt Anderson. First went to Valley Forge as Headquarters, was my duty, my time of service at the Battle of Brandywine and Skout Point, and the taking of the British at the Trap Fort near Philadelphia besides other places where in the course of service, the company was ordered. I was in the same company and regiment all the time. When enlisted, was enlisted of five years unless sooner discharged. I was discharged at the Board of War Philadelphia and received a certificate of discharge there on 4th day of July, I believe in 1783. When enlisted, was promised besides bounty money, 200 acres of land which I never got any part thereof nor anything in lieu thereof..."

Testimony was also given by three of his acquaintances that; "in his neighborhood and through this region he has the reputation of being a soldier of the Revolution and of being upwards of ninety years of age, and from his appearance we are led to believe that he is as he represents himself, a soldier of the Revolution and upwards of ninety years of age."

Davis Family researchers in later years received letters confirming his service from the Pennsylvania State Library, Harrisburg, and the War Department, Washington, DC.

Death Notes: Death Notice - Connecticut Courant, Hartford published Wednesday, 3 Sep 1806: DIED - At Simsbury, Last Monday, Mr. Eliphalet Mitchelson, aged 74 years.

General Notes: William Mitchelson maintained an account book beginning in 1714. The first entry by his son was in 1753 when Eliphalet was twenty-three, and it included his full name. The entry was a copy of a writ Eliphalet filed against Titus Brown of Windsor, whom he claimed owed him £30. The last two entries were made in 1776 and 1779, during the American Revolution. In all, Eliphalet's entries amount to no more than two pages and deal with sales of products and services entirely different from those of his father.

Eliphalet's business activities are more clearly revealed in a daybook he kept in the years 1762 and 1763. Like his father, he sold alcoholic beverages and vittles from his home in the Scotland section of Simsbury. During this period and up to the year 1770, Eliphalet was able to secure the tavern license required for selling liquor from his home. Eliphalet's daybook shows that he dispensed mainly rum and cider. Most of his sales were small amounts, a dram or gill, and these were priced at four pence per serving, one pence more than charged by his father. Most of Eliphalet's customers were males. One notable exception was the unmarried sister of William Gibbs, the first rector of St. Andrew's Anglican Church. On December 6, 1762 Elizabeth Gibbs purchased a pint of rum for one shilling. After 1770 Eliphalet's name was no longer submitted to the county court for licensure as a tavern keeper. This may reflect his membership in the Church of England at a time when increasing friction was developing between the colonies and the mother country. Roger Viets, Eliphalet's friend and the rector of nearby St. Andrew's Anglican Church, in his letter to the sponsors of his church back in England, noted the loss of public office suffered by members of the Church of England.

In addition to operating a tavern from his residence, he also most likely farmed. Eliphalet and his wife were involved in the 1778 settlement of Susanna's mother's estate. Eliphalet appears in the 1790 Census of Simsbury listing four males over 16, four males under 16, and three females living in his household. The 1800 Census of Simsbury shows Eliphalet Mitchelson listing one male age 16-26, two males age 26-45, one male over age 45, and one female over 45 living in his family. Eliphalet died 1 Sep 1806, age 76 years, in Simsbury, Conn. He left a will dated 5 Jul 1806 which mentions his wife, Susanna; and his eight children, Susanna, Rizpah, Elizabeth, John, Eliphalet, Howard, Martin and Ariel. His sons John, Eliphalet and Ariel were named executors of the estate.

Eliphalet married Susannah ENO [55] on 28 Dec 1758 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut 36.,118.,557.,562 Susannah was born in 1736 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut,563 died on 12 Nov 1812 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut39,564 at age 76, and was buried in Saint Andrews Cemetery, North Bloomfield, Hartford, Connecticut.39,563

114. Nathaniel CORNWALL [212] 254 was born on 2 Apr 1750 in East Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut255,361 and died on 22 Mar 1823 in Portland, Middlesex, Connecticut255,599 at age 72.

General Notes: He lived in East Middletown (later Chatham, now Portland), Conn. He established just before the Revolution a mill for carding and dyeing wool and dressing cloth, which was kept in continuous operation by himself and his son Daniel for about seventy years. He was a justice of the peace for many years, and was clerk of the Episcopal Church in Portland for its foundation in 1789 until his death. He had eight children born at Chatham, Connecticut.

Nathaniel's ancestors lived in and around Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut, and generally were well known and prominent citizens. His pedigree is as follows:
2nd Generation (Parents): Nathaniel Cornwall (1750 - 1823) & Jerusha Foote (1755 - 1793)
2n Generation (Parents): William Cornwall (1727 - 1750) & Sarah Shepherd (1727- 1820)
3rd Generation (Grandparents): William Cornwall (1692 - 1755) & Esther Savage (1697 - 1769)
4th Generation (2X Grandparents): William Cornwall (1671 - 1747) & Esther Ward (1669 - 1734
5th Generation (3X Grandparents): William Cornwall (1641 - 1691 & Mary Bull (1649 - 1717)
6th Generation (4X Grandparents): William Cornwall (unk - 1678) - Joan (unk - unk). William Cornwall was born in England, near the beginning of the seventeenth century, of respectable parents of the middle class. He probably served as a member of the "Kings body-guard", a corps of sixteen sergeants-at-arms who were in attendance on Charles I; that he became a Puritan, and immigrated to New England in company with one brother, Thomas, who went to Long Island. He was probably born in Hertfordshire, England, where this brother and many of the early settlers of Hartford where from. He may have come to New England because he fell out of favor of King Charles because of his conversion to Puritanism.

The first record of him in New England was a 1633 list of members of his church in Roxbury, Massachusetts, which includes the names of; "William Cornewell" and "Joane Cornewell, the wife of Willia Cornewell". No further record of him is found in Roxbury. In May, 1637, he was one of the seventy-seven soldiers, all but nineteen of whom were from Hartford and the other Connecticut River towns, who attacked and all but exterminated the Pequot Indians in their fort at Mystic. Whether he was in Hartford before this campaign or was one of the nineteen Massachusetts soldiers who joined the Connecticut force at Saybrook, is an open question. It is certain however that he was settled in Hartford very soon after the Pequot expedition.

In 1638 he was part of an expedition sent by the Colony of Connecticut to consummate the purchase territory in what is now Stratford, Connecticut from the Indians. In 1639, when the land records of Hartford begin, William Cornwall had a house lot of eight acres in the village which corresponds to a present location near the north end of Village Street. One half of his house lot lay in the "Souldier's Field," a choice tract which was divided among the veterans of the Pequot War. The total amount of land recorded to him in Hartford in 1639 was about sixteen acres. He was not one of the original proprietors but his name was third in a list of forty-two householders who, in 1640, held their rights of pasturage on the Common and of drawing wood and water "by the courtise of the town."

He styled himself "William Cornwell, Sergeant-at-Arms", in the early Hartford land records. The Hartford recorder probably put this title after William's name because he had known him in England and the position which he held there.

It was probably about 1639 that William Cornwall married his second wife, Mary, seems to be the mother of all his children mentioned in his will. No record of his first wife Joane has been found other than her name in the list of the members of the Roxbury church.

He removed to the east side of the Connecticut River at Hocanum some time prior to March 5, 1648 which was the date he bound out his second son, William age seven, to Susannah Hooker of Hartford, widow of the Reverend Thomas Hooker, with provision for his education. The original indenture in the handwriting of Governor Edward Hopkins is still in existence. In 1650 or 1651 he removed with the first settlers to Middletown, fifteen miles below Hartford on the Connecticut River. His house lot of five acres, with ten acres on the opposite side of the street, was in the center of the Village which corresponds to the corner of the present Main and Washington streets. His lands in Middletown were first formally recorded Feb. 30, 1657, though a grant is alluded to as early as March 15, 1652, about which time the land records begin. The total amount recorded to him was nine hundred and three acres. Besides this amount he had "great lot over the Great River" and an original proprietor's share in the undivided lands of the township. His descendants received this share whenever a new division was made. In a deed dated 1775 allusion is made to land "which was laid out in the right of old Sergeant Cornwell."

He was representative from Middletown in the Colonial Legislature in 1654, 1664 and 1665 and constable in 1664. In 1666 he received a grant of land in East Hartford of twenty-four acres in a general division probably because he had retained his right as a citizen of Hartford. In 1667 the General Court at Hartford "freed William Cornwell's head from paying of rates." In 1670 he was assessed in Middletown on £160, which was the fifth largest assessment in the list of fifty-two householders. In the same list his son John was rated at £40, and his sons William and Samuel at £45 each. In 1673 he was rated at £231.

He signed his will April 7, 1674, with a very feeble hand and speaks of himself as "well stricken in years and much abated in any natural strength." He deeded land on the east side of the Connecticut River Nov. 4, 1676 to his sons William and Samuel. The deed was witnessed by his son John Cornwell and son-in-law John Hall Jr., "by the assignment of their father Sergeant William Cornwell, he not being able to sign it," which shows that the "abate of his natural strength" alluded to in his will two years had progressed.

He died in Middletown Feb. 21, 1678, and was probably buried in the old cemetery by the Connecticut River, though there are no tombstones standing there of so early a date. His will and inventory are on file in the Hartford Probate office. The inventory of his estate amounted to £231.03.00 "The children of the deceased which are legatees are; John Cornwell, William Cornwell, Samuel Cornwell, Jacob Cornwell, Thomas Cornwell, Sarah Hubbard, Esther Stow and Elizabeth Hall".

He also owned a house (the Joseph Moseley House, 1803 Main Street) which served as a residence and from where he operated a tavern with his son from about 1800 to 1840.

During this time, as most inns, it was the center of social activities. Since the Moseleys had a working farm, the food served in the tavern was from the farm. They served pork, mutton, ham, chicken, fresh fish, shad when it was available, soups, vegetables, potatoes and bread, all supplied from the farm. Patrons drank cider, beer, ale, apple whiskey. Travelers expected food and liquor and sometimes needed a bed for the night. They may have complained in the morning because they probably had to share a bed with another traveler. For breakfast they most likely had porridge which had been slowly cooking over the embers all night.

At the 1840 census a John Moseley at Glastonbury was enumerated as head of household with a total of six persons, three males and three females. At the 1850 census, John Moseley (age 81) and his wife Jerusha (age 80) were living in Glastonbury. Also at the residence were son-in-law and daughter, William H (age 50) and Sophia Childs (age 49) and granddaughter Mary Childs, age 16.
