Death Notes: In December 1761, he was a delegate to the Friends" Convention at or near Poughkeepsie, NY, and was drowned on the Hudson by the capsizing of the boat in which he was returning home.

General Notes: William Gorton was probably born at Mashapaug or Westerly. (Mashapaug was included in the incorporation, 1754, of the town of Cranston). He was living in Mashapaug when his first child was born. Daniel Rogers, who lived with the William Gorton's children in New London, Connecticut, left a genealogical manuscript in which among the records of this family it reads: "William Gorton came from Rhode Island, Massapeg". His children were probably all born in Rhode Island, for the earliest record we find of him in Connecticut is January 24, 1758, as lessee of a farm of Matthew Stewart. This farm was by Stony Brook, about five miles from New London village, nine miles from Black Point, in New London town, the section set off in 1801 to Waterford. His will, dated New London, November 4, 1761, proved before Judge Gurd Salstontal, December 24, 1761, witnessed by his wife's brother, John and Hezekiah Collins and the Town Clerk, John Owen, mentions all of his children.

208. William MITCHELSON Jr. [67] 557 was born about 1680 in , , Massachusetts and died in Nov-Dec 1734 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut8 about age 54.

General Notes: The pedigree of William Mitchelson is speculative in need of further research. According to the obituary of George Mitchelson (1854-1932) the Mitchelson family arrived in the area now known as Bloomfield in 1664, probably from Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The original immigrant ancestor is believed to be a William Mitchelson (otherwise written, Mitcheson, Michason, Michelson, and Micherson) who was the brother of an Edward Mitchelson. Edward came to New England in 1635 and was prominent in the Colony of Massachusetts. He was appointed Marshal-general in 1637, an office similar in many respects to that of High Sheriff, a position he held until he died at age 77 in 1680/1.

William probably arrived at Massachusetts with his brother however, little is known of him. He married Mary Bradshaw 26 Apr 1654 and had children; Mary born 15 Jan 1654-5, Thomas born 8 Jan 1656-7, Alice baptized 3 Apr 1663 (married John Shears of Sudbury 9 Apr 1688), Ruth baptized 4 Oct 1663 and Abigail baptized 11 Mar 1665-6. William died 18 Dec 1668.

Thomas Mitchelson was a cordwainer (a shoemaker/cobbler who makes fine soft leather shoes and other luxury footwear articles) married before 20 Dec 1662 and died Feb 1689-90). He probably had children but no records have been located. His brother-in-law, John Shears of Framingham, was appointed administrator de bonis non (original executor probably had died after being awarded probate) 12 Nov. 1700.

William (the subject of investigation) is believed to have been either "Jr. or "II". William's father was probably the first Mitchelson to arrive in Connecticut and is believed to have been either an unidentified son of William (1) also named William or the aforementioned Thomas. The first mention of William was in Windsor's vital records, where his marriage to Mary Howard on April 26, 1713 was recorded. Three years later he purchased a house on a two-acre lot in Windsor from James Eno and in 1720 he began acquiring land in Simsbury's Scotland area (now part of northern Bloomfield). After 1722 he was listed as a resident of Simsbury, where he died in 1734. Mary, who would outlive William by forty years, would raise their only son, Eliphalet, and daughters Mary, Margaret and Rizpa.

Much of the life and work of William Mitchelson was found in the account book that he began on April 17, 1714 (preserved in the Connecticut Historical Society). The book reveals that he had a tailoring business while he lived in Windsor and that he eased out of that business and began selling spirits and light refreshments in the early 1720s, about the time he moved to the Scotland section of Simsbury. William's accounts for his work as a tailor cover the years 1714 to 1720 and include making coats, vests, breeches, waistbands, belts, stays, and gowns. Coats commanded the highest prices, in most cases ranging from eight to fourteen shillings. However, Captain Moses Diamond of Windsor was charged one pound, nine shillings and no pence (£1:9:0) for his coat, whereas a child's coat went for as little as five shillings. The many breeches and vests William made were priced between four and seven shillings each. In the few instances where the material used in manufacture was noted, breeches were of leather and vests of either leather or linen. He also fabricated lesser numbers of whalebone stays (seven to twelve shillings), gowns (three to four shillings), stockings (two shillings), waistbands (one shilling) and belts (five shillings). In some instances William would only cut out the material and leave further work to the customer. For these minimal services he charged four to eight pence. He also repaired and mended various articles of clothing at reduced fees.

William sold spirits from his home, where they were consumed in most cases. These entries having to do with his tavern business were made in the years 1720 to 1724. Customers drank cider and rum, with cider by far the most popular beverage. Cider was most often dispensed by the pot, which was uniformly priced at three pence. Rum was dispensed by the pint or half pint and priced at one shilling per pint. (In eighteenth-century Connecticut "a tavern usually occurred on intertown highways at three- or four-mile intervals. Probably no Connecticut man was more than three miles from one, and most were far closer.")

The credit side of Mitchelson's account book shows that most payments were made with materials or services. Unprocessed grains, meat, fish, butter, and sugar were all used for repayment. The grains were valued at around five shillings per bushel, meat and fish at three pence a pound, and butter and sugar at eight and nine pence a pound respectively. Other items accepted as payment were wool and flax by the pound, as well as linen and silk by the yard. Three grades of iron were used in payment; Canaan iron, being of the highest grade, was valued at two shillings, eight pence per pound. When service was offered in payment, it quite often involved labor to support William's tailoring business, such as, spinning, carding, dying or washing. Only rarely was cash used in payment.

William's last entry into his account book was September 5, 1724. The next entry date was 1737, two years after William's death. The inventory of his estate taken 6 Jan 1734-5 by John Griswold and John Eno was £41-12-10, recorded Feb 1734-5, Adms to Mary Mitchelson, widow. A number of years after his death, a deed dated 15 Jan 1795 (recorded at Simsbury) conveying property to Eliphalet Mitchelson, mentioned the following heirs to the "Estate of William Mitchelson late of Simsbury in the said County of Hartford deceased"; "... Margaret Woodruff of West Stockbridge in the County of Berkshire and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and Asher Atwood and Mary his wife of Weathersfield (sic) in the County of Hartford and State of Connecticut, and Azariah Skinner Junior, Roswell Skinner, Elizabeth Skinner all of East Windsor in the County of Hartford.

General Notes: John Eno was the sixth of nine children born to James and Abigail (Bissel) Eno. He was mentioned in his father's 1709 will and he was left a third part of all of his father's lands in Simsbury as well as a third of two parcels of land lying in Windsor. He settled in Simsbury where he was deeded land by the town in 1723. John seems to have farmed with his brother, William Eno, in the Simsbury are as their lands adjoined each other. In 1740, when St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Simsbury (now North Bloomfield) was formerly established, John Eno, an adult, signed the papers. In 1743, John and his brother William signed the papers for the first Rector's establishment and support. John Eno and Samuel Griswold took the inventory of the estate of William Mitchelson on Jan 6, 1734/35. In 1745, a John Eno was a soldier in the 11th Company for the expedition against Louisburg. He died in 1757, in Simsbury. The will mentioned his wife, Frances, and his six children by her. In 1759, his heirs and his brother, William, divided their land in Simsbury.

He lived in Dorchester, Massachusetts between 17 Jul 1638 and 17 Jul 1639. His house was near the mouth of Farmington river on what was known as '"the Island," because at every freshet it became temporarily one. Death Notes: He died in a smallpox epidemic that occurred in 1806.

General Notes: Joseph married Hopeful Robbins of Wethersfield in 1761 and built a house (presently 1780 Main Street, Glastonbury) probably as a wedding gift to his bride. His farm during this period produced lumber, they had sheep, cattle and farmed onions. In one year 2,500 bushels of onions were harvested. Produce and livestock were transported down the Connecticut River and on to Europe and Bahamas in Joseph Moseley's ship.

Although Joseph was over forty at the beginning of the Revolution he enlisted in Colonel Gay's Company. He was made captain of the Seventh Company. He was placed in charge of inspecting all able bodied men of Glastonbury and securing arms. It was on the lawn of the Moseley farm on Sunday, April 1775 that the Glastonbury militia assembled to answer the call to arms which had come from Lexington via horseman. When the men set off for Lexington a horse was taken from the Moseley barn by Isaac. In September 1777 Joseph Moseley allowed Syfax, a trusted slave, to take his place in the continental army, which was common at the time, under the command of Capt. Edward Eells of upper Middletown. When Washington called for the Minute Men for the defense of New York, however, Joseph Moseley left immediately with his Company. He served in the Continental Army as Captain of the Seventh Company, in Colonel Fisher Gay's regiment, of General Wadsworth's brigade, which participated in the battle of Long Island and White Plains. After the Revolutionary War he was a prominent member of the community and for many years a deacon in the Congregational Church and represented the town twelve times in the state legislature.

The Moseleys had slaves and it is believed they were housed at the rear of the ell that was added to the original house and rewarded his most loyal slaves with freedom and land. One was named Syfax who was born about 1738. Syfax married Polly one month after he was emancipated and they had at least three children; Asher born 5 May 1773, Sehara born 3 Mar 1775 and Sylvia born 21 Mar 1777 (Connecticut Town Birth Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection). In return for this service in the Continental Army Syfax was to receive one hundred dollars or one hundred acres of land. In 1786 Syfax bought five acres of land for $50 and ten years later an additional five acres adjacent to the property of Capt. Joseph Moseley. Syfax adopted the surname Moseley. Some of his children used the name Moseley as a middle name. Syfax died in 1808 at age 70. The 1790 census listed Syfax as head of household.

On 19 Jan 1798 Capt. Joseph Moseley purchased from Thomas White Griswold; land, house, barn and other out houses for $1,200. The house (presently located at 1936 Main St, Glastonbury) was built in 1790. He owned the land for seven years. Glastonbury land records state that in 1805 he deeded to his son John Moseley, the house, barn and other buildings on the corner of Main and Hubbard Streets. He died in 1806 at age 71.

According to his own account, he was born in France, July 11, 1740."

Counte d'Estaing (24 November 1729 - 28 April 1794) was a French general and admiral in the American Revolutionary War. In 1763, he was named lieutenant-general in the French navy, and, in 1777, vice-admiral. One year later, he left Toulon in command of a fleet of twelve and fourteen frigates with the intention of assisting the American colonies against Great Britain. He sailed on 13 April, and, between the 11th and the 22nd of July, blockaded at Sandy Hook, the entrance to New York harbour but did not venture to attack him, because his ships could not clear the bay's bar, although his force was superior numerically. In cooperation with the American generals, he planned an attack on Newport, Rhode Island, preparatory to which he compelled the British to destroy some war vessels that were in the harbor. Before the concerted attack could take place, he put to sea against the English fleet, under Admiral Howe, when owing to a violent storm which arose suddenly and compelled the two fleets to separate before engaging in battle. Many of his vessels were so shattered that he found it necessary to put into Boston for repairs.
